Amos Anderson art museum
Amos Anderson, a patron of Finnish art and culture,
commissioned the building in 1912-13 as an office and dwelling, to a
design by the architects W. G. Palmqvist and Einar Sjöström. Part of
the building was turned into an art museum in the 1960s.
The art museum has now been extended to the attic and cellar. The museum
comprises eleven different levels or floors, each with a unique character
that nevertheless recalls the phases of the buildings history.
The exhibition area in the attic was created by raising the roof of
the building. The existing firewalls and stairways were left intact.
Alongside rough surfaces, a concrete floor, and a ceiling of alder wood
there are transparent materials and high-gloss rendered surfaces.
Washrooms and toilets for visitors and the museums painting store and
workshops are located in the cellar, which is sunk into the bedrock.
The detailed metal and glass surfaces of the toiler furnishings accentuate
the excavated rock surfaces and the rough walls of recycled brick.
A new lift shaft outside the building frame links the various floors
of the building. The existing wall surface with its eaves gutters and
rendering continues behind the lift shaft. Optical fibre shines behind
the liquid-laminated glass covering the steel structures and in the
glazed floor openings.
The facade, which is protected by law, was cleaned and extraneous structures
and signs were removed. The original wooden windows were renovated individually.
Lighting of the street facade was installed. The light from sources
attached to new, banner poles reveals the facades rich vocabulary of
forms and materials.
