5 / 1990 - city planning

The issue is published in Finnish with English summaries of most of the articles.

Steven Holl is known as an architect of elegant interiors and poetic houses. He has also examined the problems of city edges: uncontrolled urban spawl destroys the environment. The city edge projects presented are anti-sprawl designs.

Because of changing economic structures, traffic systems and lifestyles, new city planning strategies evolve. Contemporary urban nostalgia does not focus on the turn-of-the-century perimeter block any more. Chaos, discontinuity and fragmentation describe the new reality. On pages 30–37 Bernard Leupen examines some contemporary cases.

Featured projects:
• Edge of the city, three research projects, Steven Holl
• Library of Berlin, competition entry, Steven Holl
