5 / 2010 - Asia, mobility

Throughout the ages, architecture has been exported in a similar way as religions, manners, economic systems and the implementations of power. Architect Jouni Kaipia has taken photos of buildings and cities around the world. He feels that real architecture stems from the location.

Finland’s pavilion Kirnu in Shanghai’s World Exposition receives a full introduction in the magazine. Architect Teemu Kurkela reveals that the initial idea was an island surrounded by water. An opera house designed by Pekka Salminen is under construction in Wuxi, a city in China with five million inhabitants. The familiar archipelago scenery side by side with the wonders of Asia pleases the eye in the exhibition of the two villas. Conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste says that he finds perspective to current times in the pristine scenery.

Sami Rintala is an international Finn, who reveres locality and social responsibility. Aalto University teaches how to operate in a global world. The Department of Architecture’s course takes students to the poor neighbourhoods of Phnom Penh.
