Egoism is a poor Genre

Harri Hautajärvi

“The new plans prepared for the Eteläsatama (Southern Harbour) waterfront in Helsinki have been squashed in the media. The massive concrete decks sketched by Architects Ala Oy and the plan by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for a cross-shaped glass hotel are felt to be completely unsuitable for the historically significant urban setting. (...)

Herzog and de Meuron have produced many excellent schemes, and they should be given a site in central Pasila or Jätkäsaari, for example.

Or they could be invited to participate in the general architectural competition that should be held for the Katajanokka hotel and the vacant sites of Eteläsatama. Helsinki has long traditions of organizing competitions that result in good architecture and surroundings with dozens and dozens of successful examples as evidence.”

Exerpts from Harri Hautajärvi's leader.
