Architect Pekka Pakkanen: The client of Villa Puutasku wanted a sheltered villa for the windy south-facing seafront plot, one that would survive over the decades in wind and storm without too much maintenance. The site is divided into an open rocky shoreline zone and a lush inland zone. To the southeast, a view opens all the way to the horizon, while to the southwest the view is more sheltered.

The design was guided by the idea of identifying and emphasising the existing special features of the site – a building that forms sheltered pockets, spaces and places near key points in the landscape. The roofs, through their own geometry, support the formation of recessed living areas, unifying the whole under one horizontal eaves line.

The main building and guest house are located at the interface between the coastal and inland zones, so that the buildings open towards the best views and delimit a wind-sheltered yard on the other side. The sauna building is located on the site of a previous sauna building, at the culmination point of the coastal zone.

The building materials are low-carbon, and the structures are simple and resilient. The CLT panels are weather-proofed on the exterior by cladding the walls with larch and the roofs are made of pre-weathered zinc-titanium. The interiors follow the same minimalist and unassuming selection of materials and draw on carefully curated parts of the landscape. The architectural detailing evolves from the selected building materials and their inherent characteristics.
