Prototypes lead the way to the low-carbon future

One way to develop carbon-neutral materials is to construct prototypes and demo houses that are built to actual scale. Kristo Vesikansa surveyed the most interesting experiments in Europe.

DURING HIS LECTURE at the Alvar Aalto Symposium in Jyväskylä two years ago, David Benjamin, Associate Professor at Columbia University, posed a challenge to his fellow architects. In order for our work to have a real significance in tackling the global environmental crisis, the question we should be asking with each and every one of our design commissions is how the solutions developed for the project could be scaled up for wider use.
